Earnings and capital provide context
The higher payout followed a solid second quarter for the Des Moines, Iowa-based provider of retirement, asset-management and insurance products. Principal reported non-GAAP operating earnings of $547 million, up 12% from the prior-year quarter, while non-GAAP operating earnings per diluted share increased 16% to $2.50.
Principal also finished the quarter with $808 billion of assets under management and $1.6 billion of excess and available capital.
